Rhipsalis Mesembryanthemoides (R47) NEW
Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides is a species of rhipsalis commonly called ‘Mistletoe Cactus’. The Rhipsalis genus comprises over 60 species native to South America, this species in particular is from the Atlantic Forest in Brazil where it naturally grows as an epiphyte. An epiphyte or epipytic plant refers to plant that grows on the surface of another plant referred to as the host or phorophyte.
Rhipsalis mesembryanthemoides are described as having slender and cylindrical, freely branching stems that produce a compact and bushy plant. Each stem is densely covered in fine, soft, short spines that emerge from areoles on the surface of the stem. An areole is a specialised structure found on certain plants which spines, flowers, stems or roots will grow from.
During early spring this species of rhipsalis produces small, white, waxy flowers. Once the plant is finished flowering these are replaced with small, spherical, almost translucent, white berries containing seeds. In their natural habitat, animals would eat these berries and they would be distributed across the forest.
☀️This plant prefers to be in partial shade mimicking the filtered light it would receive growing on the side of a tree in the forest. Harsh direct sunlight needs to be avoided as this can scorch the leaves.
💧Keep reasonably moist throughout the year, but a little less so in winter to prevent any rotting.
〰️These plants do prefer slightly higher humidity levels as they are tropical/sub-tropical plants but nothing that requires too much specialised care. If you notice crispy, brown looking marks on the leaves, or the foliage looking less plump than usual, this is typically a sign of not enough humidity. You can create more humidity by clustering plants together and misting the foil age.
🌡️These plants are very adaptable in regards to temperature, standard room temperatures between 18-24°C are perfect.
🍴Use a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
✂️ Most propagation is achieved by dividing large clumps or taking stem cuttings.
🪴Repot in a well draining potting mix as required. These plants do prefer to be slightly root bound. The roots are very fine and hair like so try to be very careful with the roots are ball and reduce as much disturbance as possible.
(Each living plant is unique and may vary slightly in size, colour, or shape depending on the season. Flowering plants are sent when available. You will receive a bare rooted plant similar to the ones in the pictures provided.)
